KS Concealed Carry Law Update

What businesses need to know if they wish to prohibit concealed weapons on their premises.

Concealed weapons are legal for those with permits beginning January 1, 2007.

The Kansas Personal and Family Protection Act became law this year.  Because the first licenses will be issued after January 1, 2007, several members have inquired about the required signage prohibiting concealed weapons.

The new law states that private property and business owners can prohibit concealed carry license holders from carrying concealed firearms on their property/premises by posting approved signs stating that carrying concealed firearms is forbidden.  The signs are necessary if the owner wants to prohibit not only customers/clients, but employees from carrying concealed weapons.

Here are the signage rules developed by the Kansas Attorney General’s office:

  • The size of the sign shall be eight inches by eight inches or larger.
  • The graphic developed for the signs shall be used (see below).
  • If the sign is larger than eight inches by eight inches, the size of the graphic must be proportional to the size of the sign.
  • The background of the sign shall be white.
  • The portion of the graphic depicting the handgun shall be black.
  • The portion of the graphic depicting the circle and diagonal slash across the handgun shall be red.
  • No text shall be placed within the one-inch area surrounding the graphic.
  • Each sign shall be displayed in a manner that makes the sign reasonably likely to come to the attention of persons entering the premises.
