It’s on all the job descriptions, everyone is supposed to do it, but just what does Employee Relations mean? Is it knowing all the aspects of employment law, workers compensation, EEOC, ADA, FMLA, state laws, retaining employees, and good responses on surveys? Many aspects of the Human Resource professional’s duties are fairly concrete – benefits, compensation, payroll, etc. The specific guidelines provide boundaries which establish expectations for both employees and managers. Employee Relations refers to everything else that comes up and, in many cases, no one knows exactly what to do, so it becomes an “employee relations” issue. This program will look at building an Employee Relations program: what goes into it and how to work with management to incorporate it into the organization philosophy, culture, and values. Having an effective ER program benefits the entire organization. This is an interactive program which will use a variety of case studies to view how Employee Relations programs are as diverse and unique as each of our organizations. Sheila Whiston-Fox is the Leader – Employee Health Services, Via Christi Wichita Health Network. She has served in a variety of positions in Human Resources in healthcare for over 25 years as an educator, generalist, and Employee Relations Director. She has a BA from Elmhurst College, M.Ed. and Ed. S from Wichita State University. Sheila is active in a variety of community organizations including the United Way of the Plains and the Independent Living Resource Center. This program is sponsored by National Screening Bureau and has been certified for 2 hours of recertification credit through HRCI. |
